Domain name is your web address. Examples includehttp://www.yahoo.comhttp://www.google.comhttp://www.orbitz.comhttp://www.ssa.gov
That web address is called domain name. It can be a .com for commercial sites, .gov for government, .org for organizations, .net and several others
You get your domain name from companies such as GoDaddy.com by first checking in if the domain is available, which can be anywhere from $6.99 per year to $45 or more per year
If the domain is available, you now create a website using that domain name as the address. Once you have the website done, you contact a web hosting company so they can put your website on the Web using your domain name as address. Web hosting can be anywhere from $3.99 per month to as much as $2000+ for dedicated web hosting
Web hosting is like going to a party…you need a place for everyone to go. The domain name is like the address that the party is at.
There are many sites that offer domains and hosting together, or if you find domain and hosting that’s offered from different companies, but much cheaper, just go with that. Once you purchase a domain name, most places will offer easy to understand directions about how to get your domain to work with the host you’re using. The same also applies to your hosting service.
Most places also have FAQ’s and Customer Service to help you.
I found a place that offers free hosting. Google: 110MB hosting…and you should find it. They don’t link any of their ads to their site. As far as domains go, there are lots of sources….just make sure you don’t get ripped off at one of those $30/yr places.
They are two different things:
Domain name is the url that your site will be pointed out. like http://www.onemint.com.
And then you will need space to install a database and all that stuff to support your website and that is what web hosting is. That is the server space where your website will be located.
So domain name is the address of your property and web hosting is the land that it will be built on.
I am using Godaddy.com for domain name and web hosting because I found they were the cheapest. I think their base packages will be enough for you.
Next, you will also need a Content Management System (CMS) which is like a program that will help you do all this. For CMS I am using WordPress.
All the best my friend, this can get a little confusing for beginners, but when you do it, you get a real kick out of it. I know, because I am beginner myself.
Begin by using an all-in-one solution – the easiest way to get a free professional website for your business with Microsoft Office Live Small Business – http://starturl.com/officelive . It comes with a free web design tool that lets you create web pages without coding. It has 500MB of web hosting storage and has no ads. MS is also giving a free domain name for the 1st year.
A domain name is “yourdomainname.com” or “yourdomainname.net” or any other ending extension available like “.org” or “.info”. This allows people to type “yourdomainname.whatever” into their address bar and get to your website. As for hosting, think of it like putting your website files on a computer that is meant only for serving web pages to people. When someone types in your site address aka domain name, the web hosting is what allows your pages to actually show up, the computer you have your files hosted on retries whichever ones the person is trying to access and sends them to that person for them to view in their web browser like internet explorer or firefox.
As for what you need for your business…
You will first need to pick a domain name that represents your business such as “yourbusinessname.com” – you can either get this at the site where you plan to get web hosting, or at a site that is known for domain registration.
As for web hosting, you should get a plan at a quality web host that ensures uptime (so that your clients don’t go to your website and find it to not even be online!). You should also make sure the web host has shopping cart scripts available for easy installation.http://www.hostamina.com can provide you with these things, as well as great support. They will even install a shopping cart for you if you can’t do it yourself (but they make it really easy to do yourself).
The $9.99/month plan should easily satisfy your needs.
First you buy a domain name. Cost $10. At godaddy.com , tucows.com, register.com. YOu now own a web address.
We used to pay $1,000 a year to “host” which means to store your site’s contents on their computers. Now you can do it for less at Microsoft’s Live Small Office, or Weebly, or SynthaSite.
They have exactly what you seek. /
We hosting is how a site is stored on the world wide web. A domain name is the way that others find your website. There are many web hosting companies that include a free domain name; here are some examples: http://www.alreadyhosting.com
