I dont get it isnt that kind of like selling something that isnt yours or selling moon real estate.

  1. Just like telephone numbers and area codes, SOMEBODY has to be the final authority of Internet domain names. In 1968 the United States government (who “owned” the Internet) created the ICANN for the purpose of transitioning the Internet domain name and addressing system to the private sector. The ICANN is a non profit company that sets some of the rules for the Internet. One thing it does is licenses private companies to rent out domain names.
