I’ve read a couple of articles about the subject, but all the good ones are taken, most are being parked but I don’t have much money to bid on any.
The ones I found were +10 letters, a combination of keywords, so my question is, should I play it safe and stick with a keworded domain or pick a shorter one that is easier and remember and doesn’t point to the subject directly ( web 2.0 stuff )? note that I am willing to create original content by myself.

There are two schools of thought in domain names:
- keyword rich domain names, if possible using the main keywords of the site. But as the good domain names have already been taken, the option will be 2-3 or even more keywords separated by dashes or hyphens.
Example is: work-from-home-earn-thousands.com
The advantage is that it reinforces the keywords usage in your site. The downside is that the names are hard to remember, very long, and type in traffic gives a significant room for error.
- short, unique memorable domain name. The advantage is that these names are unique and therefore least likely to be taken and used. Plus they are excellent for branding and name recall. No keywords, but easily gets top of the mind awareness
Examples include flickr.com, alibaba.com, ebay.com, yahoo.com, amazon.com
Note that the big boys hardly use keywords in their domain name. Amazon was just a river in Brazil before Amazon.com became an online superstore.
Use a unique name, and with original content, it will be easier to succeed.
I feel a keyword rich domain is better for an information site
As a general rule you should stick to keyword rich domain names.
From a SEO perspective this will help position your website as more relevant in the search engine’s perspective.
All things being equal, if you have a website about growing tomatoes, and have a keyword domain name “www.howtogrowtomatoes.com”. Your website will be ranked higher than another website with the exact same content, but with a domain name like http://www.redcool.com
If you build a web 2.0 website (and have a crack team of programmers) then you could go with a catchy name.
