It is an investment for making money.
As a cost of doing business, you get great tax breaks. I cannot remember the last time we had to pay taxes.
The tax code does help businesses.
Even when the Halliburton executives move to Dubai, they STILL get tax breaks (and no-bid contracts!).

Someone with the right intentions and know-how may well be able to make their money back on those domains. It doesn't happen every day though.

Do they really buy them? Only if they have 20 mil
Seriously, the highest price I've heard of was $8 million for bingo.com, and that was back during the "dot com bubble" of the late 90's. And it wasn't sold on eBay

The majority of those names never sells and the prices the owners are asking for are often unrealistic. However there are names that are pure generics that have sold for a lot of money, such as sex.com, business.com and live.com etc. Those sales are mostly not done via eBay though, but rather in private between buyer and seller.

Some domain names are very valuable. toys.com just sold for millions of dollars because it is short, targeted and there is only one.
But as for the MJ ones on ebay are usually long jumbles of words that are not unique nor valuable.
michael-jackson-1958-2009.com
www.michaeljack-son.com lol $550,000
Most of them are worthless, if someone really wants one they could come up with their own jumble of words with hifens (which are undesirable for .coms) for just $10!
